Designing the worlds first digital therapeutic for insomnia

Insomnia affects one in ten adults and poor sleep has a negative impact on physical and mental health and general, daily performance. Sleepio is a digital programme scientifically proven to help people overcome poor sleep.

At the centre of Sleepio are a number of tools to help record and track your sleep plus Sleepio’s secret weapon: The Prof and his narcoleptic dog; Pavlov. The Prof teaches you Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia, as written by (real professor) Prof. Colin Espie Professor of Sleep Medicine at University of Oxford. The CBT provides all the user needs to take control of their sleep.

The idea behind The Prof as the delivery mechanism for therapy grew from the need to explain complex, sometimes counterintuitive, concepts to users in a compelling way that users would enjoy and come back to learn more.

It has proved successful and in gold-standard clinical trials, 76% of Sleepio patients experienced clinically significant improvement in insomnia, as well as:

– 54% reduction in time to fall asleep.

– 62% less time awake at night.

– 45% better functioning the next day.

Sleepio is the first Digital Therapeutic to be awarded a recommendation from NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) as an effective alternative to sleeping pills.

And in the States, a health economic evaluation with IBM Watson Health and a Fortune 500 employer demonstrated that Sleepio was shown to lower health care costs by $1,677 per employee.
